“A book is a device to ignite the imagination.”
–Alan Bennett
Opening the world of books to your students is one of the most powerful gifts you can give as an educator. Here are some ideas that will help entice participation in the classroom:
- Book Scavenger Hunt – This activity is easily adaptable to most reading levels. Students can search for characters, events, or even simple words within book assignments. This activity can be done in teams in the classroom or as an individual homework assignment as a companion to longer books.
- Word Puzzles – Students can use graph paper to create their own crossword puzzles or word searches that relate to their reading assignments. These puzzles can be shared with the rest of the class in the form of photo-copied puzzle books. Another sharing option is to pick the best puzzles to be shared with the class.
- Reading Timelines – Have students create timeline graphs to highlight significant events in their reading assignments.
- Design a Book Cover – This activity inspires artistic creativity as well. Each student designs their own book cover for the same book. Covers are then displayed to the class.
